We started the morning worshipping with the Church of Christ in Richfield, Minnesota. After worship, we hit the road south to 90. Guess what we found along the way? Another Cabela's! Bill and I tried smoked Elk sandwiches while Kim and Ben had more normal fare. Then we hit the road again going West on 90.
We switched drivers a couple of times, and I caught a couple hours of nap time in the back seat. We hit South Dakota about 4:00pm, "while I was sleeping". There are less trees in South Dakota than there were in Minnesota. There are also huge fields of corn and soybeans. The wind made rippling waves in the soybeans. We also saw pasture, some with cattle and some with horses.
I had another surprise when I woke up. Are we destined to visit all of the Cabela's in the country? We stopped at the one in South Dakota so that Bill could check out the used gun selection.
Meanwhile, Kim found us a hotel room. Actually, we splurged some tonight and got a suite. Then we drove around Mitchell, the home of the corn palace, to see what it was like. Bill counted four different places offering to repair hail damage, so I'm glad we are here during good weather (so much for the good weather, the sirens are going off and a thunderstorm warning just came on TV. OK, the sirens are off and we enjoyed some great wind and lightening. Now it is raining, but does not seem too serious since the sirens are off). I had heard about the corn palace on NPR, so we stopped in for a look. The building is actually faced with corn on the cob. This has been a very dry year and the normal supply of locally grown colored corn is very limited, so there are a couple of blank places. The brochure poses the question, "why put corn on a building?", and then answers that the town fathers just wanted to get the town on the map.
We plan to drive through the badlands during the day on Monday and then visit Mount Rushmore Monday night. Here are some pictures from today: |
